How a plowing competition works

The skill of plowing has traditionally been the foundation for successful farming. Plowing matches have been part of the rural scene for a very long time, in the early days a champion plowman could expect a better wage than his fellows. The plow is still used as the primary cultivator of farmland today, despite our age with greater technological and computerization, the basic design of the plow remains largely unchanged.

The 104th Chilliwack Plowing Match will draw plowmen from a wide area across BC who bring a mix of modern and vintage equipment to compete in different classes and put their skills against one another. Judges will score plowmen on crown, straightness and firmness just to name a few. A perfect score will land you 100 points.

EVENT HISTORY

The Chilliwack Plowing Match was established in 1923 and has been running every year consecutively. The annual match is a big part of Chilliwack’s farming history. In the 1950’s there were over 55 competitors and over 3,000 spectators. The whole town used to shut down on plowing match day!
